Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in Madagascar Giant Jumping Rat

Conservation

Management decisions in conservation must be based on sound scientific evidence.  Reliable methods of estimating animal abundance and distribution are
fundamentally important.

Recently we carried out work for the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in Madagascar on:

  • Giant jumping rat
  • Flat-tailed tortoise
  • Narrow-striped mongoose
  • Bamboo lemur

Aspects of this work have been published in Oryx:

Young, R.P., Toto Volahy, A., Bourou, R., Lewis, R., Durbin, J., Wright, T.J, Hounsome, T.D. & Fa, J.E. (2008). A baseline estimate of population size for monitoring the endangered Madagascar giant jumping rat Hypogeomys antimena. Oryx 42, 584-591.
